Ukraine has imposed emergency power shutdowns across most of the country following large-scale attacks on energy infrastructure by Russia. State-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo reported that the shutdowns affected both industrial and household consumers in all but three regions. These attacks on Ukraine’s power grid have led to nationwide rolling blackouts, with the government lacking adequate air defenses to counter the assaults. Recent strikes, including an April barrage that damaged Kyiv’s largest thermal power plant and a May 8 attack on power generation and transmission facilities, have exacerbated the situation. Despite Ukraine’s air force successfully shooting down all 25 drones launched overnight, Russia has continued its offensive in the north of the country, testing Ukrainian defenses in Donetsk, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions.

In response to the escalating conflict, Russia claimed to have taken control of the village of Umanske in the partially Russian-occupied Donetsk region. In the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border, six people were injured in shelling in the city of Shebekino. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused China of aiding Russia in disrupting an upcoming international peace summit in Switzerland. Zelenskyy highlighted the participation of over 100 countries in the summit, scheduled for June 15 at a resort above Lake Lucerne, and criticized China for allegedly being an instrument in Putin’s hands. He also expressed gratitude for President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use some US-provided weapons to strike inside Russia and alleviate the pressure on Kharkiv.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in power outages affecting industrial and household consumers in Ukraine, with the country facing national rolling blackouts due to attacks on its energy infrastructure. These assaults, including an April barrage and a May 8 attack on power facilities, have highlighted the vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s defense capabilities against such strikes from Russia. Despite Ukraine’s successful defense against drone attacks, Russia continues its offensive in various regions, prompting President Zelenskyy to accuse China of collaborating with Russia to disrupt the upcoming peace summit. Zelenskyy praised the international support for the summit, set to take place above Lake Lucerne, and thanked President Biden for allowing Ukraine to use US-provided weapons to strike inside Russia.

In light of Russia’s large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, emergency power shutdowns have been implemented across most of the country, impacting both industrial and residential consumers. The lack of adequate air defenses to counter these assaults has led to nationwide rolling blackouts, exacerbating the energy shortages in Ukraine. Recent strikes, such as the April barrage and the May 8 attack on power facilities, have intensified the situation, prompting Ukraine’s air force to successfully defend against drone attacks. Despite Russia’s continued offensive in various regions, Ukraine remains determined to defend its territory and ensure the success of the upcoming international peace summit in Switzerland. President Zelenskyy’s accusations against China for aiding Russia serve as a reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and the need for international solidarity in addressing the conflict.

The escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in widespread power outages in Ukraine, with emergency shutdowns affecting most of the country’s regions. State-owned power grid operator Ukrenergo reported that both industrial and household consumers were impacted by the shutdowns, highlighting the severity of the situation. The attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, including a recent assault on power generation and transmission facilities, have forced the government to implement nationwide rolling blackouts due to the lack of sufficient air defenses to counter such strikes. Despite successful defense against drone attacks, Russia’s continued offensive in various regions, including Donetsk, Sumy, and Chernihiv, has prompted Ukraine to seek support from the international community in addressing the conflict and ensuring the success of an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland. President Zelenskyy’s accusations against China for collaborating with Russia underscore the complexities of the situation and the need for a unified approach in resolving the crisis.
