Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been indicted for his role in an attempt to overturn former President Donald Trump’s loss to President Biden in the 2020 election. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes confirmed on social media that Giuliani and 17 other defendants have been served in the state’s fake elector case for charges including conspiracy, fraud, and forgery. Mark Meadows, Trump’s former chief of staff, was also indicted in the case. Giuliani and Meadows were not named in the earlier redacted grand jury indictment but were identifiable based on descriptions in the document. Arizona has become the fourth state where allies of Trump have been charged with voter fraud allegations related to the election. Giuliani is facing multiple legal proceedings, including a bankruptcy case and an indictment in Georgia for his role in compelling state lawmakers to appoint pro-Trump electoral college electors. 11 Arizona Republicans were also indicted for submitting false documents to Congress claiming Trump had won in Arizona.
Among the indicted defendants are individuals who were nominated to be Arizona’s Republican electors and signed a document falsely claiming that Trump won the state. Strategies were devised to persuade Congress not to certify the election results, involving fake documents and attempted pressure on state lawmakers. Eastman, who was the first person to be charged and arraigned in the fake elector case, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He denied any involvement in election litigation in Arizona and expressed confidence in being fully exonerated. In addition to Eastman, 12 other people charged in the case are scheduled for arraignment on various conspiracy, fraud, and forgery charges.
