Roberto De Zerbi’s refusal to rule out replacing Jurgen Klopp puts Liverpool on red alert

Liverpool may need to replace Jurgen Klopp in the upcoming summer, and Roberto De Zerbi’s response to questions about his future at Brighton might offer some insight. De Zerbi, who has attracted interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, has achieved significant success at Brighton since joining in 2022, leading them to European football for the first time in their history. With several top managerial positions currently available, De Zerbi could be tempted to leave Brighton, even though he is under contract until 2026 and would cost around £12.8million to hire before then. After Xabi Alonso pulled out of the running to replace Klopp, De Zerbi has emerged as a top candidate for the Liverpool job, alongside Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon. Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also in need of new managers to replace Thomas Tuchel and Xavi, respectively.

De Zerbi’s future at Brighton has become a topic of speculation, especially with the team set to face Liverpool at Anfield. During a press conference, De Zerbi indicated that he has not yet made a decision about his future and would need to speak with his club’s owner, Tony Bloom, to understand their plans and vision for the future. He emphasized the importance of having a shared plan and ambition before committing to staying at the club. De Zerbi’s remarks suggest that he is open to considering opportunities outside of Brighton, and the uncertainty surrounding his future has heightened interest from top clubs like Liverpool.

When asked about signing a new contract with Brighton, De Zerbi revealed that an agreement had not been reached yet and stressed that the plan and vision for the future were more critical factors for him than the contract itself. Klopp praised De Zerbi’s work at Brighton, noting the team’s progress since De Zerbi took over and the improvements they have made under his leadership. De Zerbi’s tactical approach and ability to get the best out of his players have earned him recognition across Europe, making him a desirable candidate for managerial roles at top clubs seeking a fresh direction.

In light of Xabi Alonso’s decision not to pursue the Liverpool job, De Zerbi has emerged as a frontrunner for the position, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona also monitoring his situation. De Zerbi’s success at Brighton and his forward-thinking approach have caught the attention of top clubs looking for a new manager. While De Zerbi has not committed to a new contract with Brighton, his focus remains on the shared vision and ambition he seeks in a new role. With the managerial landscape in flux at several top clubs, De Zerbi’s future could shape the next phase of his career and potentially lead him to one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Liverpool, in particular, may find De Zerbi’s considerations about his future relevant as they look to make a decision on who will succeed Jurgen Klopp.
