Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, took a stand against antisemitism in the wake of the Oct. 7 terror attacks in Israel. He announced that he was withdrawing his support for Columbia University due to the antisemitic violence at the Ivy League school. Kraft, who had received a full academic scholarship from Columbia, stated that he could no longer support an institution that was allowing hate to grow on campus. He called for Columbia to take corrective action and end the protests immediately to regain the trust of those who have lost faith in the university. Kraft expressed hope that the Kraft Center at Columbia would serve as a safe space for Jewish students and faculty amid the growing hate.

Kraft’s Foundation to Combat Antisemitism has been actively fighting against antisemitism, especially following the Hamas terror attacks in Israel on Oct. 7. The foundation had even aired an ad during the Super Bowl to raise awareness on the issue. Amidst the surge of antisemitism on campus, Columbia University President Dr. Nemat “Minouche” Shafik announced that all classes would be held virtually on Monday as anti-Israel protesters had taken over the campus. Shafik expressed deep sadness over the actions of agitators who had caused division and fear among students and faculty with their anti-Jewish slogans and chants. She called for a reset to de-escalate tensions and allow for consideration of next steps to address the situation.

The protests and tensions at Columbia University were further fueled by individuals who were not affiliated with the university and had come to campus to pursue their own agendas. Shafik acknowledged that the community bonds had been severely tested and would require time and effort to reaffirm. She emphasized the need to address security concerns and announced additional actions to ensure the safety of students on campus. Students who did not live on campus were advised not to come to campus, and faculty and staff were encouraged to work remotely if possible. Shafik called for a de-escalation of rancor and a reset to allow for a peaceful resolution to the situation.

Kraft’s decision to withdraw his support from Columbia University highlighted the seriousness of the issue of antisemitism and the need for institutions to take a stand against hate and violence. As a prominent figure in the sports world, Kraft used his platform to call for action and support for Jewish students and faculty who were facing discrimination and fear on campus. The situation at Columbia University served as a reminder of the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their background or beliefs. By taking a stand against antisemitism, Kraft and his foundation exemplified the importance of standing up to hate and working towards a more tolerant and understanding society.
