The foundation had even aired an ad during the Super Bowl to raise awareness on the issue. Amidst the surge of antisemitism on campus, Columbia University President Dr. Nemat “Minouche” Shafik announced that all classes would be held virtually on Monday as anti-Israel protesters had taken over the campus. Shafik expressed deep sadness over the actions of agitators who had caused division and fear among students and faculty with their anti-Jewish slogans and chants. She called for a reset to de-escalate tensions and allow for consideration of next steps to address the situation.
The protests and tensions at Columbia University were further fueled by individuals who were not affiliated with the university and had come to campus to pursue their own agendas. Shafik acknowledged that the community bonds had been severely tested and would require time and effort to reaffirm.
