What To KnowAt the time of writing, states under storm warnings—issued when “a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent”—included California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, New York, and Maine.Areas affected included northern California, southwest Oregon, central, western and eastern Idaho, western Wyoming, a central section of Utah, pockets of northern Arizona and New Mexico, and western Colorado.In the East, winter storm warnings affected northern Maine and New York.While expected snowfall varied between states, accumulations between 15 and 30 inches would be possible in Colorado’s Eastern Sawatch Mountains above 11,000 feet, Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet, and Upper Rio Grande Valley-Eastern San Juan Mountains below 10,000 feet.The NWS warned that travel could be very difficult to impossible over mountain passes, particularly Wolf Creek Pass, adding that the highest snow totals were expected to be on south and southwest facing slopes of the Eastern San Juan mountainsBetween 10 and 20 inches of “heavy” snow was possible in the Sierra Madre Range in Wyoming, the service said.”Outdoor recreation could become dangerous to those caught unprepared for hazardous winter conditions,” it warned.Portions of south central, southwest, and west central Idaho, and northeast and southeast Oregon were also forecast for snow, with up to 10 inches possible in the mountains.Heavy snow with accumulation of five to nine inches would be possible in New York’s St. Lawrence County, the NWS said.What People Are SayingNWS Caribou, Maine, said on X on Thursday: “Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through midnight tonight. Isolated Power Outages areawide.”NWS Pocatello, Idaho, said on X: “Moderate to heavy snow is still expected Thursday afternoon through Friday.
