America is lovin’ it.

Being the leading consumer of fast food in the world, it’s obvious that America loves some cheap grub. And some states certainly love it more than others.

A new study conducted by the Escoffier School of Culinary Arts revealed which US states eat the most fast food — and the findings might be surprising.

To determine who loves their Big Macs the most — researchers looked at how many fast food restaurants versus general restaurants each state had.

Then they compared each state’s population to the number of fast food joints. Lastly, they examined fast food spending as a percentage of overall food spending.

The results of that data revealed the top 10 states with the most fast food lovers. Last on that list is Oklahoma — which came in 10th place.

New Mexico came in second to last. Massachusetts and Ohio were next on the list — in that order. Shockingly, California made the top 10 list — coming in sixth place.

Here are the top five states that consume the most fast food.

5. Hawaii

Hawaii is considered the fifth fast food capital of the US. It’s also the second top state with the most money spent on fast food — which makes sense considering it’s a big tourist destination.

4. New York

The biggest city in the country loves a good fast food item. Considering Manhattan is the city that never sleeps — residents earned themselves the fourth place spot on this list probably because of all their late-night McDonald’s orders.

3. Illinois

Researchers found that for every $5 residents spent on food in this state, more than $1 was spent on fast food. It’s home to Chicago — which is another touristy city that attracts many visitors probably looking to get some inexpensive grub while there.

2. Nevada

Considering Nevada is home to Las Vegas — which has a phenomenal food scene overall — it’s obvious that people who live or visit here, still love their fast food chains.

1. Maryland

Marylanders love their food to go — making their state take the No. 1 spot. According to the study, 47% of all restaurants in Maryland are fast food places.

The top 10 states that consume the most fast food:

10. Oklahoma

9. New Mexico

8. Massachusetts

7. Ohio

6. California

5. Hawaii

4. New York

3. Illinois

2. Nevada

1. Maryland

These fast food-loving states have to be careful where they’re ordering from since some restaurants are notorious for messing up customer orders.

According to Intouch Insight, a company that tracks the speed and accuracy of fast food drive-thrus, Chick-fil-A, Burger King and McDonald’s are the top three most accurate chains when it comes to getting people the food they ordered, the Washington Post reported.

The restaurants known to get your order wrong most of the time? KFC, Taco Bell, and Dunkin’.
