The outbreak has worsened in recent months, with 17 million egg-laying hens slaughtered in November and December, according to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. HPAI affected 85 commercial flocks, including egg-laying hens, in January alone.The average price of a dozen large, grade-A eggs came to $4.15 in December, up from $3.65 in November, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
