Court documents reveal that Donald Trump’s valet and co-defendant in a federal classified documents case were allegedly informed that they would receive a pardon if Trump was re-elected to a second term in the White House. This promise was relayed to the FBI by a cooperating witness in November of 2022, a year before Trump and Walt Nauta were indicted for withholding classified White House documents in Florida. The witness, identified as “Person 16,” stated that Nauta was told the investigation was politically motivated and that Trump would pardon him in 2024 even if he was charged with lying to the FBI.

Person 16 is described as a former Trump White House employee who had free access to Trump and the Oval Office and had visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate multiple times since 2021. Despite concerns about potential reprisals, Person 16 refused to have their interview with the FBI recorded, stating that recording the interview was a far bigger risk in the Trump world. It remains unclear how Person 16 learned of the alleged pardon plan for Nauta and who relayed that information to Nauta.

During Nauta’s interview with the FBI, he reportedly lied about the location and movement of boxes of White House documents at Mar-a-Lago. He misled investigators by claiming he was out for a jog rather than talking to agents involved in the classified documents probe. Nauta and Trump have both pleaded not guilty in the case, despite these allegations and evidence presented by the Justice Department.

The court documents indicate that Nauta was reassured by Trump’s team that the investigation was not going anywhere and was merely politically motivated. Despite the serious nature of the charges Nauta faced, he was allegedly promised a pardon by Trump if he found himself in legal trouble related to the case. This raises questions about potential abuse of power and interference in legal proceedings on the part of Trump and his associates.

The case involving Nauta and Trump sheds light on the complexities and potential abuses of power within the legal system. The allegations of promised pardons, lying to federal investigators, and political motivations illustrate the challenges faced in ensuring the integrity of legal proceedings. As the case unfolds, it will be essential to investigate the extent of Trump’s involvement and any potential efforts to obstruct justice or manipulate outcomes for personal gain.

Overall, the revelations in the court documents regarding the alleged pardon promise to Nauta and the interactions between Person 16, Trump, and the FBI raise significant ethical and legal concerns. The implications of these actions on the rule of law and accountability must be thoroughly examined to uphold the principles of justice and equality before the law. As the case progresses, further revelations may shed light on the extent of political interference and potential abuse of power at the highest levels of government.
