What To KnowSpeaking to reporters at the Paris AI Summit on Tuesday, Altman said that he would continue to lead OpenAI, which produces ChatGPT, for the immediate future and that there were no plans to accept Musk’s offer.”The board will decide what to do there…the mission is really important and we’re totally focused on making sure we preserve that,” Altman told Sky News. “The company is not for sale, neither is the mission.”Musk made the offer to buy the company for $94.4 billion on Monday, promoting an immediate response from Altman via social media.Altman posted on X, formerly Twitter, which Musk owns: “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”Musk has not kept his dislike of OpenAI’s management secret. In a 2024 lawsuit filing over OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft, he described the company as “a closed-source, de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world,” causing OpenAI to describe Musk’s comments as “frivolous” in a response statement. What People Are SayingElon Musk in a statement provided by his attorney to the Wall Street Journal: “It’s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was. We will make sure that happens.”Sam Altman about Musk in December 2024: “It would be profoundly un-American to use political power, to the degree that Elon has it, to hurt your competitors and advantage your own businesses, and I don’t think people would tolerate that. I don’t think Elon would do it.”What Happens NextMusk continues in his role as the head of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency.Do you have a story we should be covering?
