Train operators revealed the weirdest items lost on trains, including a prosthetic leg, a live hamster, and 22 lbs. of chicken breasts.
Northern Trains, a British train company that runs 2,500 services a day across the north of England, has recorded more than 32,690 cases of lost property since July 2022, with Manchester Piccadilly and Leeds being the hotspots.
“When a passenger comes forward to report lost property our staff work hard to track down that item and reunite them – but it’s no mean feat,” Northern’s commercial and customer director Alex Hornby said.
Customers have reported leaving their bikes on departed trains or asking for help finding a plain white handkerchief.
“We understand that losing something can be extremely stressful so we often remind customers to make sure they have all of their personal belongings before leaving the train,” Hornby added.
Employers admitted that the items most commonly lost were phones and laptops, but some of the oddest finds were a cupboard, a wig, crutches, an ironing board, and a 22-pound box of chicken breasts.
Although the team doesn’t mind connecting the forgotten items to their owners, left behind items set off an alarm for security risks.
“Unattended bags on our trains and at our stations can also prompt security alerts which cause delays and disruption,” Hornby said.
New Yorkers are also known to leave quirky items on trains during their commute from Penn Station to Montauk.

Unclaimed items eventually get sold off to an outside vendor, but the railroad keeps them from anywhere between three months and five years, depending on their value.
