Chris Young, a tech industry veteran who joined Microsoft to lead its business development initiatives in 2020, turned in his resignation today, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this afternoon.
Young, the former CEO of cybersecurity company McAfee, is stepping down effective immediately as Microsoft’s executive vice president of business development, strategy, and ventures, but will remain with the Redmond company as an employee through a transition period until the end of March, the filing says.
The filing gave no reason for his resignation.
However, Microsoft hinted that Young has something new in the works.
“We are deeply grateful for the significant impact Chris had at Microsoft over the past 4 years,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “During Chris’ tenure, he led hundreds of strategic partnerships, fostered a culture of innovation, and laid the groundwork for our future growth. We support Chris’ decision to pursue a new endeavor.”
Young oversaw Microsoft’s corporate strategy, strategic partnerships, and venture investments, working with its business and product teams to anticipate and support the company’s strategic needs.
He was one of Microsoft’s named officers, a regulatory term for a company’s top five highest paid executives, along with CEO Satya Nadella, President Brad Smith, CFO Amy Hood, and Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff. His total compensation for 2024 was $12 million, including salary and stock, according to Microsoft’s proxy.
