The holiday was first celebrated in 1879 before all federal offices started closing down in honor of the day in 1885.After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968, the holiday was mandated to be the third Monday of February.While the holiday is celebrated federally as Washington’s Birthday, many states have expanded the day to include remembrance for all American presidents.While the stock market and major banks shut down, most retailers, grocery stores and restaurants remain open.Americans should expect school and federal offices to close for the day as well.Why is the Stock Market Closed Today?The stock market shuts down for all federal holidays, including President’s Day.That means all market activities will resume on Tuesday.Stock Market’s 2025 Holiday ScheduleThe stock market closes down for several holidays throughout the year.This includes New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.What People Are SayingThe New York Stock Exchange said on its website: “All NYSE markets observe U.S. holidays as listed below for 2024, 2025, and 2026.”The National Archives writes: “The position of the holiday between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln gave rise to the popular name of Presidents Day.”What Happens NextMail will also not be delivered on Monday, and all major banks will also be closed for the holiday.That means all packages will be delayed until Tuesday, February 18.While the United States Postal Office will be closed, some services will still be available at UPS or FedEx.After President’s Day, the next federal holiday is Memorial Day.For 2025, that day falls on May 26 as a way to honor military personnel who died in service to the country.
