Lynne Mazouz and Kira Smith booked a besties trip to San Jose, Costa Rica — or so they thought.
But the two friends accidentally flew to the wrong country after making an embarrassing reservation gaffe.
The pair — who each booked their own plane tickets — secured an Airbnb in the Central American country and then packed their bags.
The two boarded their flight at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and hopped on a connecting flight in North Carolina.
But it wasn’t until they landed hours later that they realized their travel had taken them to San Jose — but the one in California.
“We f–ked up,” Mazouz immediately texted Smith. “Like bad.”
“I hope ur not freaking out.”
She advised her friend to check her airplane map to see where they had landed, and Smith couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The women realized that both their tickets had San Jose, California, printed on them after traveling from two domestic airports.
Mazouz was a tad confused when a fellow passenger mentioned moving to San Jose because of its status as the “start-up tech capital of the world.”
However, she just remembered thinking, “Hm, Costa Rica? That’s crazy.”
The friends checked their receipts and confirmed that the rest of their bookings, including housing, had correctly been made for their intended stop in Costa Rica — which meant they were stranded a long 4,000 miles away.
“We considered going to Hawaii, but then we realized, with all the money on the Airbnbs and the hostels we purchased in addition to Airbnbs and hotels in Hawaii, it would end up being so much more expensive,” Mazouz explained in her viral clip.
“I was so close to giving up because of the number of roadblocks we’d faced,” Mazouz told People.
“I was convinced the universe was sending me signs not to go.”
But they weren’t ready to give up on their planned getaway just yet.
Mazouz and Smith eventually decided to book a motel in the area and explore the bar scene in San Francisco before nabbing new flights to Costa Rica — and hopefully triple-checking their tickets.
In the end, Mazozuz deemed the trip “the best vacation of my life” and even extended her trip an extra week.
“As cliché as it sounds, the toughest journeys can lead to the most rewarding experience,” she said.
