What was once listed as an Americano — a popular coffee order made with espresso shots and water — has been renamed to the “Canadiano.”
The National Post called the move a “quiet rebellion” against the 25% import tariffs that are set to go into effect next week, as well as President Donald Trump’s comments about making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
The trend of renaming the coffee shop staple has made waves across the country, despite some owners wanting to remain apolitical.
The Canadiano insurgence started from a since-deleted Instagram post from British Columbia-based coffee company Kicking Horse Coffee that encouraged their fellow coffee shops to change the name of the drink to something more patriotic.
According to the company, they’ve had the Americano listed on their menu as a Canadiano since they opened in 2008, but shared that “we’re officially making it a thing and asking coffee shops across the country to make the switch,” the Instagram post said, according to The Washington Post.
Coffee shops across Canada followed through, sparking a trend.
“We aren’t necessarily aiming to be political,” Elizabeth Watson, owner of BC’s Palisades Cafe, told WaPo. “But we love the idea of really just supporting Canadian pride.”
William Oliveira, owner of Cafe Belém, in Toronto, Ontario, echoed the sentiment, telling the outlet that he doesn’t want his coffee shop to be a “political place,” but he finds it important to show support for their country.
“It’s good for us to just, you know, stand up for being ourselves and reminding other people…that we’re not to be pushed around and bullied by others,” he said.
Canadianos aren’t the only way Canadians have been expressing their frustrations. Canadian hockey fans booed during “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the NHL-run 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
