It’s the holiday season, which means people are traveling at higher rates — and paying a lot to do so.
Luckily, Esther Sturrus, a flight attendant who shares her knowledge on TikTok, has revealed her best tips for scoring a cheaper flight over this busy season.
Sturrus, 23, recommends paying attention to travel dates and choosing to fly in the middle of the week.
“Book flights during midweek, as they tend to be cheaper than weekend departures,” she told What’s The Jam. “You can also set up fare alerts to catch any price drops quickly.”
Being adaptable with both your travel dates and the way you get to your final stop is another of the Netherlands-based flight attendant’s top tips. For example, opting for a connecting flight rather than a direct flight could save you a significant amount.
“Be flexible with your dates and destination,” she added. “Sometimes a difference of a day or so can save you a lot.”
Some airlines also have hidden discounts when you book through their app, the KLM Airlines worker revealed.
“Always be sure to compare prices between the website and the app,” she advised.
Sturrus also shared advice on how to stay calm and reduce stress during the holiday travel chaos.
For those traveling with gifts, “consider shipping them ahead to avoid bulky luggage or customs issues,” she said.
“And when packing for your trip, try to pack smart,” she added. “Keep your essentials in your carry-on luggage, especially for long-haul flights.”
She also shared that it’s useful to arrive at the airport early “to reduce stress and allow time for unexpected delays.”
Noice-canceling headphones are one thing that should always be in your carry-on, Sturrus advised.
“They’ve been a game-changer for me this year, especially on busy flights,” she shared.
Finally, Sturrus said that “it’s always useful to use airline apps to stay updated on flight changes and to check in quickly.”
She noted that many airlines like to embrace the holiday spirit and encourage passengers to do the same, despite all the commotion.
“Traveling during the holidays can be stressful, but it’s also a time to create memories,” she said. “Don’t forget to relax, enjoy the journey and embrace the festive atmosphere, whether you’re in the airport or onboard the plane.”
