Experts are warning air fryer users not to use the nifty kitchen appliance to make popcorn.
“Stick with the microwave or the hob for popcorn if you’re settling down for a good movie night,” consumer journalist Grace Forell told BBC, warning not to “try this one at home.”
“Popcorn won’t cook well in an air fryer as most models won’t reach the required temperature to pop the kernels,” she continued.
“Popcorn kernels can also become lodged within the air fryer’s heating element, which may cause the appliance to short creating a fire hazard.”
But amateur chefs have previously taken to Reddit to explore the same predicament.
“I see everyone saying not to do it because of risk of fire. Why can’t you put aluminum over the entirety of the hot plate like you should do with anything anyways to keep it clean?” inquired one quizzical cook.
“Or even moreso, do that and wrap it around the top for the popcorn kernels to pop into?”
One commenter said that, from personal experience, “the air fryer does not work” for popcorn. Instead, they advised popping it the old fashioned wave: in the microwave.
“The best way for me is putting a cup of water next to the bag, in the microwave,” the person continued. “It takes longer, but the popcorn will not burn, and it will be very airy, fresh, and tasty.”
“Don’t do it. You will just burn the popcorn,” another warned. “Air fryers can do a lot of things but popping corn is not one of them.”
But kernels aren’t the only thing you shouldn’t put in your air fryer. Uncooked pasta, grains, cheesy foods, large meat cuts with the bone and leafy greens should be avoided.
In fact, chef and author Poppy O’Toole previously said that anything involving batter should not be air fried.
“It needs that contact heat of hot oil to cook, rather than the non-contact heat of an air fryer,” she wrote, per the Daily Mail.
“Otherwise you just end up with mess and a little bit of crunchy batter.”
