Ring, the Amazon-owned video doorbell and home security company, is branching out into smoke and carbon monoxide detection through a partnership with fire-safety company Kidde.
The companies announced a new line of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors from Kidde that will integrate Ring’s technology. Users will be able to get alerts on the Ring app and opt-in to an optional new $5/month subscription from Ring for professional monitoring of the devices.
Ring is playing catch-up in this market with Google’s Nest, which has long offered its own line of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
There will be two new Kidde devices with Ring: a Smart Smoke alarm ($54.97) and a Combination Alarm ($74.97) with smoke and carbon monoxide detection. They will go on sale in April at Home Depot, with other stores added later.
The new devices were announced Monday in conjunction with CES in Las Vegas.
Also at CES this week, Ring is introducing 2K video resolution for its Floodlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam Pro devices, promising better detail and clarity in footage. This will be available via a free update to existing users.
