Disagreements with the Parliament about abortion were also part of the reason Health Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi saw sexual and reproductive health removed from his portfolio and placed for the first time under the Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib. “It’s a member state competence, so we will need an agreement from all of us. We will need this unanimity, but I hope that we will be able to protect women’s lives,” said Lahbib during her first appearance in the Parliament’s public health committee.
