Review of ‘Girls State’: Missouri teenagers engage in a mock government experiment

The documentary “Girls State” explores what an all-female government could look like in the U.S. through the eyes of high school students participating in the Girls State program. Filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss focus on a group of midwestern teens in Missouri during a week-long camp where they simulate a government. During this week, a leaked draft of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, legalizing abortion nationwide, adds an extra layer of intensity to the discussions among the young women.

The film showcases various perspectives on hot-button issues like abortion and gun rights, with the teens engaging in debates and discussions with their peers. Despite their differing viewpoints, the girls are excited to have their voices heard and to listen to what others have to say. McBaine and Moss carefully select a diverse group of main characters with differing backgrounds and beliefs, including a city girl from St. Louis who sees herself as the most liberal, a reformed conservative, a moderate conservative advocating for bipartisanship, and a Black girl who reflects on being possibly the first Black person some others have seen at the camp.

A significant moment in the documentary comes when the girls react to rumors of unequal treatment between them and the boys attending Boys State on the same campus. The girls feel disheartened by the perceived preferential treatment given to the boys and launch an investigative effort to uncover any potential disparities. This highlights the girls’ growing awareness of gender inequities, even in a simulated political setting, and their willingness to challenge and address these issues.

“Girls State” offers a glimpse into the minds of American teenagers who are passionate about politics and policy, even as they engage in a mock government exercise. The film raises questions about whether these young participants will maintain their interest in politics as they grow older and how they will impact the future of democracy in the country. By showcasing the ambition and enthusiasm of these young individuals, the documentary emphasizes the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders who are willing to engage in civil discourse and take action on important societal issues.

As a follow-up to the Boys State program, “Girls State” provides a captivating look into the thoughts, beliefs, and actions of high school students as they navigate a simulated political environment. It offers a microcosm of American youth, highlighting their diversity in perspectives and backgrounds. The documentary encourages viewers to reflect on the potential for young people to drive positive change in society through their engagement in politics and policy. With its focus on the ambitious and passionate voices of these young women, “Girls State” serves as a compelling reminder of the importance of empowering the next generation of leaders.
