Researchers have discovered a massive extinct snake in India that measured 50 feet in length.

New research suggests that an enormous snake may have once inhabited India, with fossilized vertebrae found near a coal mine in western India indicating that the snake may have been between 36 and 50 feet long, weighing up to a ton. The snake, named “Vasuki indicus” by researchers, is believed to have lived about 47 million years ago. It likely constricted its prey and was a slow-moving ambush predator. The researchers estimated its size by comparing the fossilized vertebrae to those of living snakes.

While claims of giant snakes similar in size to Vasuki indicus have been reported in modern times around the world, they are often dismissed as hoaxes. In South America, legendary giant serpents such as the “Yacumama” and “Sachamama” are said to reside in rivers and are described to be about 100 feet long. These stories are often considered folklore or myths, and there is little concrete evidence to support their existence.

Cryptozoologists, who study cryptids or creatures that have been claimed to exist but never proven to exist, point to many examples of these supposed giant snakes. In a 1980 episode of the British television show “Mysterious World,” Belgian Air Force Colonel Remy Van Lierde described a 50-foot snake that had lunged at his helicopter in 1959 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. While he claimed to have taken a photograph of the snake, its authenticity is disputed.

In 2023, a video claiming to show a 50-foot snake living in the Congo went viral on social media but was debunked by Reuters. These claims continue to spark interest in the possibility of giant snakes existing in remote and unexplored regions of the world. Despite the lack of concrete evidence, stories of giant snakes and other mysterious creatures persist in various cultures and regions, with legends of enormous serpents captivating the imagination of many.

The discovery of the fossilized vertebrae in India sheds light on the potential existence of giant snakes in the past, with Vasuki indicus representing a massive predator that may have roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The research provides valuable insights into the evolution and diversity of prehistoric reptiles, offering a glimpse into a world where giant snakes may have once reigned supreme in India’s ancient ecosystems. The study underscores the importance of continued exploration and discovery in uncovering the mysteries of the natural world.

While the existence of giant snakes like Vasuki indicus may seem like a thing of the past, the allure of these mysterious creatures continues to capture the fascination of cryptid enthusiasts and researchers alike. As stories of enormous serpents persist in folklore and mythology around the world, the possibility of encountering a real-life giant snake remains a tantalizing prospect for those who seek to unravel the mysteries of the natural world. The ongoing debate over the existence of such creatures highlights the enduring appeal of cryptids and the enduring power of ancient legends to captivate our imaginations.
