Four of the seven people who were killed in the sinking of a luxury yacht off Italy’s coast likely died from suffocation after depleting a pocket of air while trapped inside the submerged ship. Autopsies revealed that the victims did not have water in their lungs, suggesting they died from “dry drowning” when all available oxygen is consumed, leaving only carbon dioxide. The victims included Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith, lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda.

Italian firefighter divers recovered the bodies of the victims from the yacht, which sank after being hit by a violent storm while anchored off the coast of Sicily. The 184-foot British-flagged ship was carrying 22 people, with 15 being rescued by the Italian Coast Guard. Among the survivors was British tech star Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who owns the firm under which the yacht is listed. The group had been celebrating Lynch’s recent acquittal of fraud and conspiracy charges related to the acquisition of his software maker Autonomy.

The autopsies of two more victims, Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, are expected to take place soon, while the autopsy of the ship’s onboard chef, Recaldo Thomas, has been delayed pending contact with his family in Antigua. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the yacht’s sinking, including whether human error played a role. Authorities are working to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident to gain a better understanding of what happened.

The sinking of the luxury yacht has left many in shock and mourning the loss of those who perished in the accident. The victims were found in the same cabin, suggesting that they were together at the time of the sinking. The tragic deaths have raised questions about safety measures on luxury yachts and the importance of being prepared for emergencies at sea. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise when sailing in unpredictable weather conditions.

The victims were well-respected individuals, including business professionals and a renowned tech entrepreneur, whose lives were cut short in a sudden and tragic manner. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through their communities and beyond, with many expressing their condolences and sympathy for the families of the deceased. The investigation into the sinking is crucial in determining the cause and preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The families and loved ones of the victims are grappling with the devastating loss and trying to come to terms with the tragic events that led to their deaths. The survivors of the sinking are also coming to grips with the trauma and loss they experienced during the harrowing ordeal. As the investigation continues, authorities will work to provide answers and closure to those affected by the tragedy, while also seeking to prevent similar incidents through improved safety measures and regulations for luxury yachts.
