Report: Two teams attempted to trade for Justin Herbert prior to selecting quarterbacks

The Los Angeles Chargers are going through a rebuild, but it is not as extensive as some may think. This offseason, they made significant changes to their roster by parting ways with key players such as Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Austin Ekeler, following a disappointing 5-11 season. The team faced challenges in 2023, including blowing a 27-point lead in the playoffs against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a humiliating loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Brandon Staley was fired, and star quarterback Justin Herbert’s season was cut short due to injury. The Chargers then hired Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach, hoping for a fresh start.

Jim Harbaugh, who previously coached at Michigan with success, is providing a new identity for the Chargers. However, he made it clear that he is committed to Justin Herbert as the team’s quarterback and has no intention of replacing him. Despite rumors that other teams, such as the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, inquired about Herbert’s availability, Chargers general manager Joe Horitz shut down any possibility of trading their star quarterback. Herbert was drafted by the Chargers with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and signed a lucrative contract extension before the 2023 season.

In the 2023 season, Justin Herbert faced some challenges, with his numbers slightly declining compared to previous seasons. In 13 games, he threw for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. However, he still showed promise and potential as the team’s franchise quarterback. To support Herbert, the Chargers selected Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey in the second round of the draft, joining last year’s first-round selection Quentin Johnston. The team is focused on building around Herbert and providing him with the necessary support to succeed.

The Chargers’ rebuild under Jim Harbaugh includes a shift in the team’s identity and culture. Despite the departure of key players and coaching changes, the team is determined to return to winning ways. The Chargers are investing in Justin Herbert as their franchise quarterback and are confident in his abilities to lead the team to success. With a new head coach at the helm and young talent being added to the roster, the Chargers are looking towards the future with optimism and a renewed sense of purpose.

As the Chargers navigate through their rebuild, they are focused on establishing a winning culture and developing a competitive team. The changes made to the roster and coaching staff reflect the team’s commitment to building a successful franchise. With Justin Herbert leading the way, the Chargers are looking to bounce back from a challenging season and compete at a high level in the coming years. The team’s determination to succeed and support for their young quarterback demonstrates their confidence in the direction they are heading.
