Peter Oosterhuis, a legendary golfer and broadcaster, passed away at the age of 75 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. During his playing career, Oosterhuis was a six-time Ryder Cup participant, three-time European Tour winner, and one-time PGA Tour winner. Despite coming close to winning multiple major championships, his true success came in the Ryder Cup, where he is tied for the all-time singles victories record with six. Oosterhuis was a popular figure in golf broadcasting, known for his unique style and distinct perspective, especially during his work with CBS at the Masters.

Oosterhuis made a name for himself in Europe before joining the PGA Tour, where he was ranked No. 1 for four years. He had one PGA Tour victory at the 1981 Canadian Open and finished third in the 1973 Masters. His loyalty to Great Britain was evident in his two runner-up finishes at The Open Championship. Oosterhuis also competed in events around the world, including on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa and in Mexico. After retiring from professional golf, he transitioned seamlessly into broadcasting, where he spent nearly two decades as a commentator, most notably at the Masters.

His retirement from broadcasting came in 2014 when he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the challenges he faced, Oosterhuis remained a respected figure in the golf world, known for his contributions both on and off the course. His impact was felt not only through his playing career but also through his work as a broadcaster, where his voice became synonymous with the closing holes at Augusta National. Oosterhuis’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him, and his passing marks the end of an era in golf broadcasting.

CBS Sports paid tribute to Oosterhuis, praising him as an integral part of their golf coverage and an incredible teammate. His impact on the sport was significant, and his contributions to the game will not be forgotten. Oosterhuis’s success in both playing and broadcasting are a testament to his skill, dedication, and passion for golf. While he may no longer be with us, his memory will continue to inspire fans and players alike for years to come. Peter Oosterhuis leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of golf, remembered for his talent, professionalism, and love for the game.
