Morgan Geyser, who was involved in the stabbing of her classmate to please the horror character Slender Man more than a decade ago, has filed a petition for her release from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Wisconsin. This is the third time in the last two years that she has asked the judge to release her. Previously, her first petition was withdrawn two months after filing, and the second petition was denied by the judge.
Geyser’s petition doesn’t provide any arguments for her release but rather cites state laws that require the judge to appoint an expert to examine her and produce a report within 30 days. The petition also requests a hearing, which the judge scheduled for November 1st following state law requirements.
Morgan Geyser, now 22 years old, along with Anissa Weier, attempted to murder their classmate Payton Leutner in 2014, luring her to a Waukesha park after a sleepover. Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier encouraged her to do so. Leutner barely survived the attack. The girls claimed they wanted to become servants of the fictional Slender Man and feared harm to their families if they didn’t carry out the attack.
Following the incident, Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide and was sent to the psychiatric institute due to mental illness. Similarly, Weier pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide and was also sent to the psychiatric center. Weier was granted a release in 2021 to live with her father but was ordered to wear a GPS monitor.
The judge had previously denied Geyser’s second request for release in April, citing her continued risk to the public. Geyser’s attorney, Anthony Cotton, has not yet responded to requests for comments on the recent petition for release. It remains to be seen how the upcoming hearing scheduled for November 1st will progress and if there will be any new developments regarding Geyser’s potential release from the mental health facility.
