The City of Regina has partnered with SGI to introduce an underpass flood detection sensor system for Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive. This new system includes sensors installed in the underpass that automatically trigger when flooding reaches a high-risk level, informing drivers and City staff that the underpass is closed. “Do not enter” signs will turn on when the system is active, with additional signs installed at traffic lights near the affected intersections. The system will also send a notice directly to the City to help staff respond more effectively to flooding. The $185,000 price tag for the system is funded with $60,000 from SGI and $125,000 from the city.

One of the main goals of this initiative is to reduce the risk of vehicles getting stuck in underpasses during heavy rainfall. It is almost normal to see a vehicle or two stuck in an underpass when it rains in Regina, and this system aims to prevent such incidents from occurring. With the automatic trigger system and the “do not enter” signs, drivers will be alerted to avoid the flooded underpasses. The red lights at the intersections will also indicate that the road is closed, further reinforcing the message to drivers and helping to prevent accidents.

The partnership between the City of Regina and SGI is crucial in implementing the underpass flood detection sensor system. The funding for the $185,000 system comes from both parties, with $60,000 contributed by SGI and $125,000 by the city. This collaboration ensures that the system is effectively deployed and maintained, helping to improve the safety and efficiency of the city’s infrastructure. By working together, the City and SGI can address the issues of flooding in underpasses and minimize the risks to drivers and pedestrians.

The new flood detection sensor system is a proactive measure taken by the City of Regina to address the recurring issue of underpass flooding during heavy rainfall. By installing sensors that automatically trigger when flooding reaches a high-risk level, the city can quickly inform drivers and close off affected underpasses to prevent accidents. The system also sends alerts directly to City staff, enabling them to respond more effectively to flooding and take necessary actions to mitigate the impact on traffic and infrastructure.

In addition to the flood detection sensors, the system includes “do not enter” signs and red lights at traffic intersections near the underpasses. These visual cues help to communicate to drivers that the underpass is closed and should be avoided. By providing clear and timely information to drivers, the City of Regina aims to reduce the number of vehicles getting stuck in underpasses during heavy rainfall, improving safety for all road users. The system is a step towards enhancing the city’s resilience to extreme weather events and ensuring the smooth operation of its transportation network.

Overall, the introduction of the underpass flood detection sensor system in Regina demonstrates the City’s commitment to improving infrastructure safety and resilience. By partnering with SGI and investing in advanced technology, the City aims to prevent accidents and minimize the impact of underpass flooding on traffic flow. With the new system in place, drivers will be better informed about underpass closures during heavy rainfall, reducing the risk of getting stuck in flooded underpasses. This initiative showcases the City’s proactive approach to addressing infrastructure challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
