Recovering Thousands of Guns from an Airport: A Secret Mission in Brazil’s Flooded South

A group of volunteers in southern Brazil claim they were misled into participating in an operation to remove several thousand firearms from the airport of Porto Alegre. The volunteers, initially under the impression that they were there to save children stranded by the floods, were informed by a woman claiming to work for Brazil’s largest gun manufacturer, Taurus Armas, that they would actually be rescuing rifles and pistols. Despite their initial reservations, the volunteers were told that the operation was important to prevent the weapons from falling into the hands of criminals and that they could be detained if they refused to participate. The group eventually went along with the operation, which was also supported by the Federal Police and the Army to ensure security.

Video footage shared by one of the volunteers, Nicolas Vedovatto, showed the operation taking place at the airport warehouse, with the volunteers working alongside Taurus’ team and being escorted by heavily armed Federal Police agents. A public security source confirmed that criminal groups had become aware of the weapons at the airport, prompting the operation to remove them. Taurus, in response to questions from the Associated Press, confirmed that the operation had taken place but stated that they were unaware of the volunteers’ involvement and would investigate the allegations with police authorities. The Federal Police also confirmed that Taurus and the company’s contracted individuals were the only ones involved in removing the weapons from the airport.

The operation, which was first reported by UOL and later detailed by Vedovatto in an account to ABC+, has raised concerns about the involvement of volunteers in removing firearms from the airport. Vedovatto stated that the woman who recruited them showed them her company ID, which linked her to Taurus on social media, although Taurus did not confirm her employment status when asked by the AP. The woman, identified as Vivian Rodriguêz, did not respond to calls or messages from the AP. More than 150 people have been confirmed killed by the floods in southern Brazil, with many more missing and over 600,000 forced from their homes.

The involvement of volunteers in the operation to remove firearms from the flooded airport has sparked controversy and raised questions about the legality and ethics of the operation. The volunteers, who were initially under the impression that they were there to save children, were reportedly coerced into participating by threats of detention if they declined. Taurus has stated that they were unaware of the volunteers’ involvement and will investigate the allegations, while the Federal Police confirmed that only Taurus and their contracted individuals were involved in removing the weapons from the airport. The situation highlights the challenges of responding to emergencies such as floods and the potential for unintended consequences in complex operations involving multiple stakeholders.

The video footage shared by Nicolas Vedovatto provides a glimpse into the operation at the airport warehouse, where the volunteers worked alongside Taurus’ team and were escorted by armed Federal Police agents. The involvement of criminal groups becoming aware of the weapons at the airport added urgency to the operation, which was carried out under the supervision of various security forces. The volunteers’ role in the operation, which was initially misrepresented to them, raises questions about transparency and accountability in emergency response efforts. As the investigation into the operation continues, there will likely be calls for greater oversight and safeguards to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The flooding in southern Brazil has resulted in a significant loss of life and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, highlighting the urgent need for effective disaster response and coordination. The involvement of volunteers in the operation to remove firearms from the airport, while controversial, underscores the challenges of navigating complex emergencies and the ethical considerations that come with such operations. As the recovery efforts in the region continue, it will be important for authorities to ensure that all actions taken are in line with legal and ethical standards, and that the safety and well-being of the affected population remain a top priority.
