Recent events involving the royals as Charles prepares to resume public duties

King Charles III, the 75-year-old British monarch, is slowly returning to public life after a three-month break to focus on his treatment and recovery from an undisclosed type of cancer diagnosis. As he eases back into his royal duties, he plans to visit a cancer treatment center to show appreciation for the support he has received. Despite his health challenges, Charles will continue to fulfill his state responsibilities, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. His summer schedule will be less packed, with his attendance at events determined closer to the dates.

Since ascending to the throne on September 8, 2022, Charles has had several notable events in his reign, including his first foreign visit to Germany in March 2023, where his command of the German language impressed lawmakers. He was officially crowned at Westminster Abbey in May 2023 and made state visits to France and Kenya later that year. In December 2023, Charles attended a Christmas service at Sandringham and continued his official duties despite his health concerns. The royal family has also faced other health challenges, such as Kate undergoing abdominal surgery in January 2024 and Sarah, Duchess of York, revealing her diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

In late January 2024, Charles was admitted to a London hospital for three days for prostate treatment, following which he and Kate were discharged together. Buckingham Palace announced his cancer diagnosis on February 5, prompting Prince Harry to visit the U.K. from California to see his father. Despite the health scare, Charles made a public appearance outside a church near his estate on February 11, waving to well-wishers. The royal family faced further tragedy with the unexpected death of Thomas Kingston, Prince Michael of Kent’s son-in-law, in late February. Meanwhile, Prince William had to miss a memorial service due to a personal matter, although Kate continued to recover well.

In March 2024, Kensington Palace released a photo of Kate with her children to mark Mother’s Day, which was later retracted by news agencies over concerns of digital manipulation. Amid speculation about her health, Kate issued an apology on social media for the confusion, explaining that she occasionally edits photos like many amateur photographers. In a video address on March 22, Kate announced that she is undergoing treatment for cancer, including chemotherapy, and emphasized the importance of focusing on her recovery. By the end of March, Charles attended an Easter Service in Windsor, interacting with well-wishers, and Buckingham Palace announced his return to public-facing duties in April. The royal family continues to navigate both personal and public challenges with resilience and grace.
