Five people have died and over 100 have been hospitalized after taking a Japanese health supplement produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. The company faced criticism for not disclosing internal problems sooner, with the first public announcement coming in March. The products, including Benikoji Choleste Help meant to lower cholesterol, contain an ingredient called benikoji, a red species of mold. Some individuals developed kidney problems after taking the supplements, prompting an investigation by government laboratories to determine the exact cause.
President Akihiro Kobayashi apologized deeply for the situation, expressing remorse to those who have died or fallen ill, as well as to their families. He also apologized for the impact on the health food industry and medical profession, vowing to prevent further damage and improve crisis management. The company’s products have been recalled, along with other products containing benikoji such as miso paste and crackers. The health ministry in Japan issued a warning that the number of deaths could increase, as some of the supplements were purchased or exported before the recall, potentially by tourists unaware of the health risks.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had been selling benikoji products for years, with a million packages sold over three fiscal years, but issues arose with supplements produced in 2023. The company revealed that it had produced 18.5 tons of benikoji the previous year. Some analysts attribute the problem to recent deregulation initiatives aimed at expediting the approval process for health products to boost economic growth. The health ministry compiled a list of all recalled products containing benikoji, including those utilizing the substance for coloring purposes.
