Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver has defied critics’ negative reviews by soaring to the top of Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart for the week of April 15-21. The film, a follow-up to Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, premiered on Netflix on April 19 after a limited run in theaters.
The Scargiver, a sprawling space fantasy that originated as a pitch for a Star Wars spinoff, continues the story of Kora (Sofia Boutella) as she leads a rebellion against the militaristic Motherworld planet led by Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein). Despite thinking she defeated Noble at the end of A Child of Fire, Kora is surprised to learn that he has survived and is returning to crush the rebellion.
Since its release on Netflix, The Scargiver has garnered 21.4 million views, making it the number one film on the Global Top 10 Movies chart. This success surpasses that of the true-crime documentary What Jennifer Did, which debuted on the chart with 18 million viewers. In the U.S., The Scargiver entered the chart at number three, behind What Jennifer Did and the spy thriller Anna.
While The Scargiver may have topped the charts, it received harsh criticism from critics, earning a 15% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 84 reviews. The Audience Score fared slightly better at 52% positive based on over 1,000 ratings. This reception was worse than the previous installment, A Child of Fire, which received a 21% “rotten” rating and a 57% positive Audience Score.
Despite the mixed reviews, Zack Snyder hinted at the possibility of more chapters in the Rebel Moon saga. He revealed that there are R-rated cuts of both A Child of Fire and The Scargiver that will be available for streaming on Netflix in the future. However, official release dates for these versions have not been announced. In the meantime, viewers can enjoy both films on the streaming platform.
