Protesters in Bangladesh rally at universities, calling for halt to Israel-Hamas conflict

Monday’s protests came as violence between Israel and Hamas entered its second week, with Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and rockets fired by Palestinian militants toward Israeli cities. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians, including women and children, sparking global outrage and calls for a ceasefire. The United Nations Security Council has held emergency meetings to address the situation, but has been unable to agree on a resolution due to opposition from the United States, a key ally of Israel.

The protests in Bangladesh reflect a wider trend of global solidarity with the Palestinian cause, with demonstrations taking place in cities around the world. In addition to calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war, activists are demanding an independent Palestinian state and an end to the ongoing violence and human rights violations in the region. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been vocal in her condemnation of Israel’s actions, accusing the government of committing genocide and calling for international intervention to stop the violence. The government of Bangladesh has also reiterated its support for the Palestinian cause and its commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The protests in Bangladesh were organized by the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League party. Thousands of students from universities across the country took part in the demonstrations, chanting anti-Israel slogans and carrying Bangladeshi and Palestinian flags. Student leaders emphasized the need to stand against atrocities, massacres, and human rights violations in Gaza, highlighting the impact of the conflict on civilians, particularly women and children. They also expressed solidarity with protests taking place in the United States and other countries, calling for a united front against oppression and injustice.

The protests in Bangladesh come amid growing international pressure on Israel to end its military campaign in Gaza and engage in dialogue to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The United States, one of Israel’s staunchest allies, has faced criticism for its support of Israel’s actions and its blocking of UN Security Council resolutions calling for a ceasefire. The Biden administration has expressed concern about the escalating violence and has called for both sides to de-escalate and engage in dialogue. However, the situation remains volatile, with both Israel and Hamas showing no signs of backing down, leading to fears of further casualties and destruction.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League has called for continued protests and rallies to keep the pressure on Israel and raise awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people. The student group has urged the international community to take action to stop the violence and ensure the protection of civilians in Gaza. They have also called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and UN resolutions. As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, the protests in Bangladesh and around the world serve as a reminder of the global solidarity with the Palestinian cause and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

As the Israel-Hamas conflict enters its second week, the protests in Bangladesh highlight the widespread condemnation of Israel’s actions and the call for an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has joined the chorus of voices denouncing Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, accusing the government of genocide and calling for international intervention to stop the violence. The Bangladesh Chhatra League has organized demonstrations at universities across the country, with thousands of students participating in the rallies. The protests reflect a broader trend of global solidarity with the Palestinian cause and a growing outcry against the ongoing violence and human rights violations in Gaza.
