The footage showed police pummeling protesters, which led to a $13 million settlement in a class-action suit.
In a video posted on Twitch, a group of people were seen filming police officers and commanders walking on Bay Ridge Avenue. A police commander grabbed one of the filmmakers, who was then pushed to the ground, handcuffed, and arrested. Despite the arrests, other protesters continued to record the events as they unfolded. The arrested individuals were taken to police vans and driven to headquarters in Manhattan. The protest eventually dispersed as a light rain began to fall by 8 p.m. The chaotic scene highlighted the tense atmosphere surrounding the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the deep divisions within the community regarding the issue.
The protest was organized by Within Our Lifetime, an activist group led by Palestinians, to commemorate the Nakba, or “catastrophe,” when Palestinians were forced from their homes during the 1948 war that led to Israel’s founding. The organization has been holding an annual rally in mid-May in Bay Ridge, a neighborhood with a significant Arab population. Given the heightened tensions surrounding the war in Gaza and ongoing protests in New York, this year’s event was charged from the start and quickly escalated into a confrontation between protesters and police. Eyewitnesses described seeing police indiscriminately grabbing people off the street and sidewalk, leading to multiple arrests and violent encounters.
