The main opposition parties in Britain are demanding the Conservative government to release the legal advice it has received regarding whether Israel has breached international humanitarian law during the war in Gaza. They argue that if the law has been violated, the U.K. should halt arms sales to Israel. The death toll in the ongoing conflict has raised concerns and calls to end arms exports have intensified following the killing of seven aid workers, three of whom were British, in an Israeli airstrike. Labour Party’s foreign affairs spokesman, David Lammy, emphasized the seriousness of the accusations against Israel and urged the government to make the legal advice public.

London, a staunch ally of Israel, is facing backlash over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Mayor Sadiq Khan, one of the country’s senior Labour officials, expressed confusion over the government’s reluctance to publish the legal advice it has received. He stressed the importance of transparency to ensure that the British government is adhering to international law. The Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party, two smaller opposition parties, also called for a suspension of arms sales to Israel. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, however, did not commit to releasing the legal advice but emphasized the U.K.’s commitment to following strict rules and procedures for arms exports.
