President Sánchez dispenses with political calculations

Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government of Spain, has announced in an open letter that he will take a few days to reflect on whether it is worth continuing in his position. This decision has led to speculation on what he will decide, with both praise and criticism surrounding him since he took office. Critics say that he is only motivated by opportunism to remain in power, while his political opponents have quickly denounced his decision to reflect, accusing him of trying to appear as a victim. They have threatened to challenge him, whether he stays, resigns, or calls for elections. Conversations suggest that his decision may be emotional or impulsive, rather than strategic.

The day after Sánchez announced his decision, plans to promote Teresa Ribera as a candidate for the European elections were put on hold as he focused on the Catalan campaign to support his friend and candidate, Salvador Illa. The letter written by Sánchez to the public, without a letterhead, on a blank sheet of paper, appears to be impulsive. His plans were disrupted when a court accepted a complaint against his wife, Begoña Gómez, causing him distress and pain. Despite the accusations, Sánchez and his team have not provided a defense or explanations regarding his wife’s professional relationships with businessmen connected to the Koldo case.

There is no illegality or judicial case, but Sánchez has expressed outrage at the use of his wife in political attacks. The request for explanations made by the leader of the opposition party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, regarding Begoña Gómez and others close to the President, has caused concern in La Moncloa and the PSOE. Sánchez has accused Feijóo, along with Santiago Abascal of Vox, of contributing to a political smear campaign. The uncertainty surrounding Sánchez’s future decision has led to speculation about whether he will choose to continue in politics or start anew, as he did in 2016 when he resigned his seat in Parliament.

In the midst of this political turmoil, Sánchez’s personal and professional relationships have been called into question. His wife’s alleged involvement in a business scandal has raised concerns about his judgement and integrity. Despite this, Sánchez and his team have remained steadfast in their defense of Begoña Gómez and their refusal to engage in further discussion about her connections. As the pressure mounts and accusations fly, Sánchez faces a difficult decision about his future in politics and whether the sacrifices are worth the continued scrutiny and attacks from his opponents. Until the final decision is made, the future of Pedro Sánchez and the stability of the Spanish government remain uncertain.
