President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan accused Russia of attempting to cover up the shooting down of a passenger plane, which resulted in at least 38 deaths. Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin apologizing for the incident, the Kremlin has not officially confirmed that Russian air defenses were responsible for the crash. Aliyev criticized Russia’s response, calling the initial explanations absurd and accusing Russia of trying to conceal the truth.

While a Kremlin statement mentioned that Russian air defenses were engaging with Ukrainian attack drones, it did not explicitly state that Russian forces shot down the plane. Aliyev, who is known to have a close relationship with Putin, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency regarding the incident. The two leaders held a phone call to discuss the matter, but details of their conversation were not made public. Survivors and crew members of the Azerbaijan Airlines flight reported hearing a loud bang before the crash on Christmas day.

Passenger Subhonkul Rakhimov recounted his experience of hearing the loud noise and preparing for the worst as the plane started to show signs of damage. Another survivor, Vafa Shabanova, described hearing two explosions before the plane eventually crashed. The incident has raised speculation about the role of external interference, with Azerbaijan Airlines suggesting that there may have been external factors contributing to the crash. The lack of clarity surrounding the events of that day has left many questions unanswered.

The tragic crash has sparked international attention, with concerns being raised about the safety of air travel and the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The conflicting statements from Azerbaijan and Russia have added to the confusion and raised suspicions about the true cause of the crash. The incident serves as a reminder of the complex geopolitical tensions in the region and the challenges of maintaining air safety in such volatile environments.

As the investigation continues, the families of the victims seek answers and accountability for the lives lost in the tragic crash. The survivors are left to grapple with the trauma of the experience and the uncertainty of what caused the plane to go down. The aftermath of the incident has highlighted the importance of clear communication and transparency in such situations to prevent misinformation and speculation from taking hold. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments in the investigation to determine the true cause of the crash and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
