Premier hesitant about Brisbane stadium proposal, Gabba excluded from test cricket lineup, unions advocating for 18 weeks of paid parental leave.

Cricket Australia recently announced their plans for the next seven summers, revealing that Brisbane will miss out on hosting a Test match in the 2026-27 season for the first time in 50 years. This decision is due to a combination of factors, including fewer Test matches being scheduled that summer and uncertainty surrounding the future of the Gabba’s infrastructure. While Melbourne will retain the iconic Boxing Day Test and Sydney will continue to host the New Year’s fixture, Brisbane’s exclusion has raised concerns about the long-term viability of the venue for international cricket.

The Gabba, located in Brisbane, has been a significant venue for cricket in Australia for many years. However, with its current lease set to expire in 2030 and concerns about its infrastructure, Cricket Australia is working towards finding a long-term solution that will ensure the venue can continue to support Queensland Cricket and Australian cricket in the years to come. Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird emphasized the importance of finding a suitable venue in Brisbane that can meet the needs of both domestic and international cricket in the future.

The decision to exclude Brisbane from hosting a Test match in the 2026-27 summer is partly due to the limited number of Test matches scheduled for that season. New Zealand is set to tour Australia for a four-Test series, and a special 150-year anniversary Test against England will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March. With fewer opportunities available for Test matches, Brisbane’s exclusion was deemed necessary in order to accommodate other venues and special events throughout the summer.

While Cricket Australia has granted long-term security to Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne as host venues for Test matches in the coming years, the future of the Gabba in Brisbane remains uncertain. Despite the historical significance of the Gabba as a cricket venue, concerns about its infrastructure and long-term viability have raised questions about its continued role in hosting international cricket matches. Cricket Australia’s decision to exclude Brisbane from hosting a Test match in the 2026-27 season reflects the need for a more sustainable and reliable venue for cricket in the region.

In order to address the challenges facing the Gabba as a cricket venue, Cricket Australia is working closely with the Queensland government and the Australian Football League (AFL) to find a long-term solution that will ensure the venue’s future success. While Brisbane may miss out on hosting a Test match in the upcoming summer, efforts are being made to secure the Gabba’s position as a key venue for cricket in Australia for years to come. By collaborating with various stakeholders and exploring options for infrastructure improvements, Cricket Australia aims to establish a sustainable and modern venue that can meet the needs of players, fans, and officials well into the future.

Overall, Brisbane’s exclusion from hosting a Test match in the 2026-27 summer highlights the importance of having secure and suitable venues for international cricket in Australia. As Cricket Australia looks ahead to the next seven summers, a focus on improving the infrastructure and long-term viability of key venues, such as the Gabba in Brisbane, will be essential for maintaining the high standards and traditions of the sport. By working collaboratively with government authorities, sporting organizations, and other stakeholders, Cricket Australia is striving to ensure that cricket fans across the country can continue to enjoy world-class matches in iconic venues for years to come.
