Portland State University president requests police assistance following instances of property damage by anti-Israel protesters

The president of Portland State University, Ann Cudd, has called on the city’s police to remove anti-Israel protestors who have caused property damage at the campus library. The demonstrations escalated when a group of individuals broke into the Millar Library, while others blocked access from outside. Cudd stated that while the university supports free speech, breaking and entering and property damage cannot be condoned. Portland Police Bureau has been requested to remove the trespassers, estimated to be 50 to 75 people, from the library. Graffiti has been sprayed all over the building, making it a criminal event requiring a different response.

The Portland Police Bureau Chief, Bob Day, mentioned that with the breaching of the library and fortifications, the situation is no longer considered a public order or free speech event but a criminal event. Police are collaborating with PSU and its law enforcement to develop a plan to deescalate and resolve the situation without arrests or the use of force. Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt expects felony charges to be filed against the protesters for burglary, felony criminal mischief, and other possible misdemeanors. Schmidt emphasized that educational institutions deserve to be safe spaces for students without fear of violence or intimidation.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler condemned the protestors’ actions, expressing solidarity from the university, city, county, prosecutors, and police against criminal destruction and violence. Wheeler emphasized that such acts will not be allowed to prevail in the city. The issue stems from the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has heightened emotions and led to protests. While acknowledging the importance of the issue to the community, Cudd underscored the need to uphold the rule of law and prevent disruptions such as breaking and entering and property damage at the university library. The situation has escalated to the point where law enforcement intervention is necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of the campus environment.

The involvement of law enforcement reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need to protect the property and individuals on campus. Cudd’s decision to call for police assistance highlights the university’s commitment to upholding its values while maintaining a safe and secure environment for learning and academic activities. The actions of the protesters have disrupted the normal functioning of the campus, prompting a coordinated response from authorities to address the issue effectively. By seeking the removal of the trespassers and potential legal consequences for their actions, PSU aims to restore order and prevent further incidents of vandalism or disruption on the campus.

The response from city officials and law enforcement indicates a unified stance against criminal behavior and violence in the community. Mayor Wheeler’s statement underscores the importance of maintaining peace and order in the city, emphasizing that destructive actions will not be tolerated. As the situation unfolds, efforts are being made to deescalate tensions and resolve the conflict peacefully while upholding the rule of law. By working together with various stakeholders, including the university, police, prosecutors, and community leaders, a coordinated approach is being taken to address the challenges posed by the protests and ensure the safety of all individuals on campus.
