Portal Space Systems is a Seattle-area startup that is introducing a new type of satellite that uses solar thermal propulsion, which harnesses the heat of the sun to power its thrusters. This technology, which has never been used before in space, could be tested as early as next year. The Supernova satellite bus, developed by Portal, has already received over $3 million in funding from the Defense Department and the U.S. Space Force. The satellite bus includes a solar concentrator that focuses sunlight on a heat exchanger to produce thrust, allowing for greater mobility in orbit.

Jeff Thornburg, co-founder and CEO of Portal Space Systems, has a background in propulsion technologies and has worked on various projects including the methane-fueled Raptor rocket engine for SpaceX. He became interested in solar thermal propulsion due to its potential for innovation and advancement in the space industry. Solar thermal propulsion had been researched by NASA and the Defense Department years ago, and Thornburg saw an opportunity to further develop this technology. Portal is not the only company working on solar thermal propulsion, but their system aims to provide higher levels of performance compared to other competitors.

The Supernova satellite bus is designed to provide high-performance propulsion capabilities of up to 6 kilometers per second of delta-v, which is significantly higher than existing systems. Additionally, the technology allows for the satellite to operate independently of the sun’s position, ensuring continuous operation. The Pentagon is interested in solar thermal propulsion as it aligns with its strategy for responsive and dynamic space operations. Portal was selected to receive a contract to work on technologies that will propel the U.S. Space Force towards future space operations by 2026.

Portal’s Supernova satellite bus has applications beyond military use and could be utilized for commercial purposes as well. The technology allows for greater flexibility in satellite operations, such as redeployment in different orbits, rendezvous with other spacecraft for refueling or debris removal. Portal aims to offer a satellite bus structure that can cater to various payload applications, providing unique opportunities for companies in the space industry. The company plans to grow its team and expand its production facility in the Seattle area.

Portal’s strategic investors and launch plans for the demonstration mission haven’t been disclosed yet, but Thornburg emphasizes the importance of success based on factors beyond funding. He highlights the trust and support received from the U.S. Space Force as a crucial measure of success for Portal. The company aims to demonstrate the potential of solar thermal propulsion and contribute to advancements in the space industry. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, Portal Space Systems is positioned to make a significant impact on the future of space exploration and satellite technology.
