Police say Sweden’s Eurovision Song Contest to have strict security measures due to increased terrorism threat

The upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden is facing increased security measures due to potential unrest and terrorism threats, according to police. Pro-Palestinian activists are planning rallies in downtown Malmo to advocate for Israel’s exclusion from the competition. Last year, Sweden raised its terror threat level to “high” amid escalating security concerns, including protests over Quran burnings. Security will be strict during the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, with demonstrations expected to take place that could lead to unrest in the city.

The head of police in Malmo, Petra Stenkula, stated that the security for the event will be rigorous, with reinforcements being brought in from across Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. The application for a demonstration to burn a copy of the Quran before the song contest has already been submitted, although there is no specific law in Sweden prohibiting the desecration of religious texts. Despite the strong freedom of expression in Sweden, the police will need to assess the situation carefully to ensure safety during the Eurovision Song Contest.

Pro-Palestinian activists have planned two large demonstrations to protest Israel’s participation in the event, with concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could overshadow the pop music festival. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the event organizer, has stated that they oppose any form of online abuse or hate speech directed at artists associated with the contest. Eurovision, launched in 1956 to foster unity after World War II, has grown to include almost 40 countries, including non-European nations like Israel and Australia.

Attempts are being made to keep politics out of the contest, but controversies have arisen in the past. For example, Russia has been banned from participating since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Sweden, the host of last year’s contest, will be hosting the competition for the third time in Malmo, with the live televised final scheduled for May 11. Despite the challenges and security concerns, organizers are working to ensure that the Eurovision Song Contest will be a successful and enjoyable event for participants and viewers alike.

The Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo has always been a popular and celebratory event that brings together people from different countries through music. Despite the tensions and potential disruptions this year, organizers are focused on maintaining the spirit of unity and joy that Eurovision represents. With the tight security measures in place and a strong stance against hate speech and harassment, the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo is set to be a memorable and entertaining experience for all involved.
