The worker at the Gelato shop offered a joint to a Post reporter the day before the raid, stating that they were prepared for the possibility of being raided. Despite the warnings, the worker remained defiant and vowed to continue selling weed, even if it meant doing so on the street. City Councilman Justin Branna mocked the store as authorities conducted the raid, emphasizing that operating illegally and taunting authorities was not a wise move. The Post was able to identify over 100 suspected illegal weed shops in a short period by working with elected officials, community boards, and business groups. The Community Board 10 in southern Brooklyn identified more than 20 illegal pot shops in their area alone. Mayor Eric Adams also claimed that there were thousands of illegal smoke shops in the city, far outnumbering the state-licensed dispensaries.
