Poland highlights growing military strength during holiday honoring defeat of Red Army

Poland commemorated its historic 1920 victory over the Red Army on Armed Forces Day, honoring fallen soldiers and displaying modern military equipment aimed at deterring the perceived threat from Russia. More than 2,500 Polish troops, along with allied soldiers from the U.S., Britain, and Romania, participated in a parade in Warsaw, showcasing tanks, fighter jets, and helicopters. President Andrzej Duda emphasized the need to arm themselves to prevent any potential attacks, especially in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since breaking free from Moscow’s control in 1989 and joining NATO, Poland has been working to modernize its army, particularly in response to Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine since 2014. The heightened fears across NATO’s eastern flank have led to increased military efforts in countries like Poland, which feels the need to strengthen its defenses against potential Russian threats. The presence of U.S., British, and Romanian soldiers in the parade symbolized the unity among allies in facing common security challenges.

The annual celebration of Armed Forces Day in Poland coincides with the anniversary of the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, a significant victory over Russian Bolshevik forces that halted their advance into Europe. The historical context of the parade served as a reminder of the enduring threat that Poland has faced from more powerful and often aggressive neighbors. Despite being a NATO member, Poland continues to feel vulnerable, especially after experiencing a migration crisis along its border with Belarus, which was perceived as a form of hybrid warfare orchestrated by Moscow and Minsk.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the significance of the holiday in honoring the heroic episodes of the Polish army and the sacrifices made for independence and freedom throughout history. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the border crisis with Belarus have fueled concerns among Poles about the intentions of the Kremlin and the potential risks to their own security. A recent $10 billion deal with the U.S. for Apache attack helicopters marked a milestone in Poland’s military modernization efforts, enhancing the capabilities of its Abrams tanks and F-35 aircraft.

The display of modern weaponry in the parade, including American F-35s and Apaches flying alongside Polish forces, underscored the commitment of NATO allies to defend against any threats to the alliance. The U.S. Embassy emphasized its unwavering support for protecting every inch of NATO territory, recognizing the importance of collective defense in the face of evolving security challenges. The presence of international troops in the parade reflected the solidarity and cooperation among allied nations in addressing common security concerns and safeguarding the stability and peace of the region. Overall, the event served as a demonstration of strength and unity in the face of perceived threats, demonstrating Poland’s determination to ensure its security and sovereignty in a complex and dynamic geopolitical environment.
