Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radek Sikorski, has ordered the closure of one of the three Russian consulates in the country due to alleged acts of sabotage sponsored by Moscow. Sikorski demanded that Russia cease its “hybrid war actions” against Poland and its Western allies, warning of further action if these actions continue. The Russian Consulate in Poznan has been targeted for closure, with its personnel being unwelcome in Poland. This decision comes in response to incidents such as an attempted arson attack in the city of Wroclaw, which Sikorski claims was orchestrated by Russian agents.
Sikorski referenced the arrest of a Ukrainian citizen in January who confessed to being instructed by Russian agents to carry out the arson attack in Wroclaw. The attempt was thwarted, and the suspect is currently awaiting trial. The foreign minister further stated that approximately 20 individuals suspected of sabotage are under investigation in Poland, with additional arson plans allegedly in the works in allied countries. The escalating tensions have prompted Poland to take assertive measures against Russia, accusing them of engaging in hybrid warfare tactics against Poland and other Western nations.
In response to Poland’s actions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has vowed a “painful response” to what she labeled as a hostile act. The strained relations between the two countries have escalated due to accusations of Russian involvement in acts of sabotage within Poland and across Europe. Poland’s pro-European Union government has attributed these actions to retaliation for their support of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
