PM Anwar Criticizes Media Reports on Malaysia’s Fuel Subsidies Cut, No Final Decision Reached

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia has stated that no final decision has been made regarding the implementation date of fuel subsidy cuts in the country. He emphasized the need to explain the method of implementation in a way that does not burden the people. Anwar criticized foreign media reports as “unethical” and specifically addressed recent reports about the development of a casino in Johor’s Forest City project, which he stated was never discussed.

News reports had suggested that fuel subsidies would be cut by June, following an upcoming by-election in Selangor. The by-election is seen as a test of the dynamics between different factions in Anwar’s unity government. Official and industry sources have indicated that diesel prices will soon float to market rates, followed by a gradual increase in petrol prices. Anwar has previously mentioned that diesel subsidies would be re-targeted in phases in Peninsular Malaysia without involving Sabah and Sarawak.

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has indicated that targeted subsidies for petrol and diesel are likely to be implemented this year using various mechanisms such as individual net disposable income. Addressing the casino talks, reports had emerged that Anwar had met with business figures in Forest City to discuss the development of a casino. Anwar denied these claims and called them a lie. Malaysian police will be recording a statement from the chief editor of an English news portal over the story.

Anwar stressed the importance of reliable sources in reporting on matters of policy, especially in the case of fuel subsidy cuts that require government notice and official announcements. He highlighted the need for responsible journalism and respect for the principle of press freedom. The issue of fuel subsidies remains a topic of discussion in Malaysia, with details yet to be finalized on the implementation and timeline of any changes. Anwar’s comments come in the midst of media speculation and reports on various issues related to the country’s economic policies and development projects.
