Plastic surgeons raise concerns over rise of ‘Ozempic face’ in Hollywood

Ozempic is a weight loss treatment that has become increasingly popular, with some celebrities in Hollywood reportedly experiencing a side effect known as “Ozempic Face.” Surgeons claim that this condition, characterized by sunken eyes, gaunt cheeks, and saggy skin, is a result of the fat-fighting capabilities of the injectable treatment causing the face to lose volume, making the individual appear older and more deflated. The rise in “deflation” in Hollywood has been attributed to Ozempic’s ability to curb the appetite and induce rapid weight loss.

A panel of surgeons speculated that at least half of 15 celebrities who experienced major weight loss transformations may have suffered from this facial emaciation. Among those discussed was actor John Goodman, who lost nearly 200 pounds through dieting, exercise, and giving up alcohol. While Goodman denied taking Ozempic, surgeons noted the changes in his face as a result of weight loss, such as more lines, wrinkles, and deflation, which are typical of overall weight loss regardless of the use of weight loss drugs.

Singer Robbie Williams, who admitted to taking something similar to Ozempic, was also scrutinized by surgeons who pointed out hollowing under his eyes and cheeks, as well as more wrinkles appearing due to a loss of volume. Likewise, Sharon Osbourne, who reportedly lost weight on the drug, was deemed a dramatic example of “Ozempic face” with sunken eyes, hollowed cheeks, loss of facial volume, and increased wrinkling. Other celebrities mentioned as potential sufferers of this condition included Jessica Simpson, Scott Disick, and Liam Payne, the latter of whom was believed to have undergone buccal fat surgery to streamline his face.

Despite its effectiveness in inducing weight loss, Ozempic has been linked to various side effects, including vision problems, constipation, and changes in personality. Some individuals who stopped taking the drug reported regaining more weight than they had lost. The drug, which mimics a naturally occurring hormone that tells the brain it’s full, has garnered 9 million prescriptions in the last three months of 2022. While “Ozempic face” is more pronounced in men due to their less frequent use of fillers and makeup, examples like Sharon Osbourne demonstrate the significant impact the condition can have on an individual’s appearance.
