Pere Navarro, the director general of Traffic, is preparing for a new Easter operation with an expected 16 million displacements. In an interview at the DGT headquarters in Madrid, he discusses the upcoming Easter holiday traffic and the measures being taken to ensure safety on the roads. With a calm demeanor, Navarro emphasizes the importance of motorcycle safety and the need for vigilance during high traffic days. He also highlights the impact of speed cameras on reducing speeding incidents.

The DGT plans to install 88 new speed cameras this year, focusing on locations with a history of speed-related accidents. They are also transitioning towards using more fair and effective section speed cameras. Navarro stresses the importance of reducing accidents among motorcyclists, highlighting the increase in motorcycle fatalities over the past decade. He discusses the typical profile of motorcycle accidents, which often occur on secondary roads during weekends involving high-powered motorcycles.

Navarro mentions the upcoming implementation of tests for driving 125cc motorcycles, as well as regulations for electric scooters. He emphasizes the need for helmet use and age restrictions for scooter riders, along with mandatory registration and insurance requirements. Additionally, he discusses the introduction of covert motorcycle patrols during weekends and new regulations for driving on snow-covered roads during winter.

When asked about reducing road fatalities, Navarro acknowledges the continuing challenge, especially concerning motorcycle accidents, road departures, pedestrian collisions, and alcohol-related incidents. He highlights the need for society to address the issue of alcohol use and driving. Looking towards the future, Navarro discusses the role of advanced vehicle technology, such as connected vehicles and autonomous driving, in improving road safety.

Navarro refrains from commenting on the potential introduction of tolls on highways, as it falls outside his jurisdiction. He also addresses the tragic incident of six individuals being killed in a traffic stop by the Guardia Civil, expressing condolences for the loss of life and emphasizing the need for thorough analysis and prevention measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future. Navarro receives daily updates on road fatalities and significant accidents to stay informed and address the ongoing road safety challenges.

In conclusion, Navarro advises drivers to prioritize safety during the Easter holiday, reminding them not to take unnecessary risks on the road. He highlights the importance of wearing seat belts, avoiding distractions, and practicing responsible driving behavior. Navarro emphasizes the importance of shared responsibility on the roads and encourages adherence to traffic rules and regulations for the benefit of all road users. As the DGT continues its efforts to improve road safety, Navarro remains committed to reducing traffic accidents and fatalities in Spain.
