People who believed in Cameron Skattebo feel validated: ‘No one understood what we saw in him’

Arizona State was initially predicted to come last in the 16-team Big 12 but have managed to qualify for quarterfinals in the Peach Bowl thanks to standout performances from player Cameron Skattebo. He went from having no FBS offers after high school to ranking fifth in the 2024 Heisman Trophy voting, and has become a major figure in college football for his impressive ability not only to break tackles but to surprise and enthrall spectators.

Cameron’s parents, Leo Skattebo III and Becky Skattebo, recall that he demonstrated extraordinary determination, competitiveness and fearlessness from a young age. He eagerly took on challenges, often causing both concern and amusement with his stunts. His brother Leo IV confirms that Cameron was extremely competitive and always wanted to emerge victorious, no matter the nature of the challenge.

Despite his clear athleticism and drive, Skattebo struggled to get picked up by major FBS programmes after high school, despite leading his team to numerous victories. His parents and coach discuss the initial disappointment of universities passing on him, and how they began to question their judgement. However, coach Troy Taylor of Stanford University breaks from the trend and decides to take Skattebo based on the player’s intense determination and raw talent.

Skattebo played impressively in his first season at Sacramento State running for 520 yards, scoring six touchdowns, and earning the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year title. However, after Taylor left Sacramento State, Skattebo decided to enter the transfer portal, and was picked up by Arizona State University. Some of the Arizona State team talk about their first impressions of Skattebo and their shock at his unparalleled determination and ability to overcome any obstacle in his path.

In his first year at Arizona State, Skattebo moved from strength to strength. He ran for 788 yards and also played as a quarterback, completing six passes on 15 attempts for 150 yards and a touchdown. He also lined up as a receiver for another 100-plus snaps, proving himself a versatile and invaluable player. With his help, the Sun Devils are progressing through the playoffs and will soon play the fifth-seed Texas in the Peach Bowl.

Reflecting back on Skattebo’s journey, those who have watched him from high school to the present, including former opponents, teammates, and his own family, express their admiration for his grit, talent, and perseverance. They reminisce over his highlights and speculate hopefully about his promising future, optimistically anticipating a successful NFL career. They also reflect on the broader lesson that comes with Skattebo’s journey, that is, the value of resisting doubts and prejudices in the face of undeniable talent and resilience.
