Pentagon says US will come to defense of NATO allies in event of attack, following Russian missile entering Polish airspace

The U.S. is prepared to fulfill its NATO commitments and defend its allies in the event of an attack, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh. This assurance came after Poland’s deputy foreign minister mentioned that NATO was considering shooting down Russian missiles that come too close to its borders, pending approval from Ukraine. The U.S. is focused on ensuring that Ukraine has the necessary resources on the battlefield, as the country faces an ammunition shortage and is in need of shells and missiles. A stalled aid package worth approximately $60 billion from the U.S. Congress is hindering support to Ukraine, but a recent defense aid package of weapons and equipment worth $300 million was unveiled on March 12.

Russia launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine between March 21-25, targeting the country’s critical infrastructure more heavily than before. The attacks included 190 missiles, 140 Shahed-type drones, and 700 aerial bombs, causing significant damage. The ongoing conflict has put Ukraine’s power grid at risk, with Russia aiming to disrupt it in the latest wave of attacks. The situation remains tense as President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to appeal for international support and assistance to defend the country against the Russian aggression.

The incident of a Russian missile entering Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine on March 24 raised concerns about NATO’s defense commitments. The possibility of shooting down Russian missiles that pose a threat to NATO’s borders is under consideration, with the need for approval from Ukraine highlighted. The U.S. reiterated its stance on defending every inch of NATO and standing by its allies in case of an attack. Previous incidents, such as a missile flying into Polish territory during a Russian mass strike in 2022, have underlined the importance of preparedness and coordination among NATO members.

Despite the challenges and complexities of the ongoing conflict, the U.S. remains committed to supporting Ukraine and ensuring its defense needs are met. The delivery of a defense aid package worth $300 million demonstrates Washington’s determination to stand with Kyiv and provide the necessary resources to strengthen its capabilities on the battlefield. As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the focus remains on countering Russian aggression, protecting Ukraine’s sovereignty, and upholding the principles of the NATO alliance.
