The late Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny’s posthumous memoir, titled “Patriot,” is set to be published this fall. Navalny, who died while serving a politically motivated prison sentence, was known for his anti-corruption investigations and opposition to President Vladimir Putin. His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, revealed that Navalny began writing his memoir after surviving a poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok in 2020. She described the book as a final act of defiance that showcases his commitment to fighting against dictatorship.

Navalny wrote much of “Patriot” while recovering in Germany from his poisoning and drafted the entire manuscript himself. Upon returning to Russia in January 2021, he was immediately arrested by authorities. The memoir, scheduled for release on Oct. 22, has been translated into 11 languages and will also be published in Russian. Pre-orders for the book were made available on Thursday, with an initial print run of 500,000 copies. The autobiography is expected to provide insight into the life and beliefs of Navalny, offering readers a glimpse into his personal integrity and unwavering bravery.

The decision to publish Navalny’s memoir posthumously follows his death at an Arctic penal colony on Feb. 16. Widely regarded as a political prisoner, Navalny’s passing was mourned by his supporters around the world. His activism against corruption and his vocal opposition to Putin’s regime made him a prominent figure in Russia’s political landscape. Despite facing threats and attempts on his life, Navalny remained dedicated to his cause and continued to challenge the authorities until his untimely death.

Yulia Navalnaya, who has been instrumental in keeping her late husband’s legacy alive, has spoken about the significance of “Patriot” as a representation of Navalny’s life and values. She emphasized his unwavering commitment to the fight against oppression and speculated that the book could inspire others to continue his work. The publication of Navalny’s memoir by Penguin Random House’s U.S. and U.K. subsidiaries signifies the global impact of his activism and the importance of preserving his message for future generations.

Through his writings and actions, Navalny left a lasting impact on Russian politics and society. His courageous stance against corruption and authoritarianism resonated with many who sought change in the country. The release of “Patriot” offers a glimpse into Navalny’s personal journey, shedding light on the challenges he faced and the ideals he stood for. As readers delve into his memoir, they will gain insight into the man behind the headlines and the enduring legacy he has left behind. Navalny’s story serves as a reminder of the power of individual resistance against oppressive regimes and the enduring fight for freedom and justice.
