Eurostat data shows that a significant portion of EU workers spend at least half of their working day on internal and external communication, whether online or in person. This means that for many people, managing their inbox, Teams, and Slack chats takes up a significant amount of their time while at work. The study revealed that 46% of workers in the European Union find themselves overwhelmed by the amount of time they spend on communication tasks, with the highest percentages reported in countries such as Malta, France, and Austria.
Interestingly, the data also highlights some differences in communication habits between genders and age groups. Women were found to spend more time on communications than men, with 51.5% of female workers dedicating at least half of their time to internal and external communication, compared to 43% of male employees. Additionally, millennials and Gen Zs were identified as the most engaged age groups when it comes to communication tasks. Among male workers, millennials aged 30-44 were the most engaged, while Gen Zs were the most engaged among female workers, with 56% of them spending at least half of their time on communication tasks.
Certain professions were also found to spend more time on communication tasks than others. Finance and insurance professionals were reported to spend the most time on communications, with 58.5% of workers in this industry dedicating a significant portion of their day to communication. This was followed by professionals in education and hospitality, who also spend a significant amount of time on communication tasks. On the other hand, the sector with the lowest rate of time spent on communication tasks was agriculture, forestry, and fishing, with only 19.3% of workers in this industry dedicating half of their day to communication.
Overall, these findings shed light on the importance of effective communication in the workplace and the amount of time that employees are devoting to managing their communications. With advancements in technology and the rise of remote work, the need for clear and efficient communication has become even more crucial. Employers may need to consider how they can help their employees manage their communication tasks effectively to ensure productivity and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed. By understanding these communication trends, organizations can work towards creating a more efficient and productive work environment for their employees.
