Outrage on social media over Rosa Parks-inspired bikini: “This is insane”

A Rosa Parks-inspired bikini has created uproar online due to the perceived exploitation of the Civil Rights icon’s legacy for profit. The swimsuit, offered by Guatemalan luxury brand Divinoseas, is a two-piece set in “Sea Salt” and “Light Pink” shades. The top is priced at $90 and currently out of stock, while the bottoms are on sale for $36. The description of the swimwear mentions Rosa Parks and her contribution to the Civil Rights movement, but many online critics find the use of her name disrespectful.

The fashion house behind the controversial swimsuit, Divinoseas, claims that they were inspired by Rosa Parks’ rebellion against apartheid-style segregation in the United States. They describe the swimwear as a salute to haute couture with a focus on luxury. The brand has a collection of bikini styles named after other influential women, such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosalind Franklin. Despite the intention to pay homage to these trailblazers, the Rosa Parks bikini has faced backlash for being seen as tone-deaf and offensive.

Critics online have expressed their outrage over the Rosa Parks bikini, questioning the ethics of profiting off a black history icon with a garment that costs $167. They find the use of synthetic materials and high prices disrespectful to Rosa Parks’ legacy and the Civil Rights movement. Some have compared the swimsuit to other controversial tributes to late celebrities, such as the disturbing display of rapper Goonew’s body at a nightclub and Gracie Hunt’s ill-advised Kobe Bryant-inspired glam shoot.

The controversy surrounding the Rosa Parks bikini has sparked discussions about cultural appropriation, ethical fashion, and the commodification of historical figures for profit. The backlash highlights the importance of thoughtful and respectful representation of historical figures and cultural icons in fashion and media. The incident serves as a reminder of the impact of consumer activism and social media in holding brands and individuals accountable for their actions and decisions.

Despite the claims of paying tribute to Rosa Parks and other influential women, Divinoseas’ bikini collection has faced criticism for being out of touch with the values and principles these women stood for. The brand’s attempt to blend luxury fashion with historical reverence has backfired, leading to a public relations crisis and damage to their reputation. The incident underscores the need for companies to be mindful of the cultural, social, and historical context when creating products and marketing campaigns to avoid causing offense and backlash.
