Our understanding of the losses of Russian mercenaries in Mali

Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group suffered heavy losses in a two-day battle against Tuareg rebels near Mali’s border with Algeria. The group confirmed the losses in a rare statement, detailing fierce battles that took place from July 22 to July 27. The fighting resulted in tactical victories followed by losses for the Russian mercenaries, with the rebels regrouping and increasing their numbers to 1,000 due to a sandstorm. This incident is said to be one of the largest losses suffered by Russian mercenaries in overseas operations, excluding their involvement in Ukraine.

The fighting in Mali reportedly broke out after the army and its Russian allies clashed with separatists from the Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development (CSP-PSD) rebel movement in the Tinzaouatene district. The rebels claimed a major victory over Mali’s army and the Russian allies, resulting in the seizure of equipment, weapons, and prisoners. The Wagner group did not confirm how many of its fighters were killed, but conflicting reports suggest that the death toll could be significant. The Al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM claimed they attacked the convoy and killed Russians and Malians, but these claims could not be verified.

The Wagner group has been active in Africa as an extension of the Kremlin’s influence, with operations overseen by Wagner’s leader until his death in 2023. Following his death, the Russian Defense Ministry took control of operations, incorporating them into a larger organization known as Africa Corps. Reports emerged in December that Wagner had resumed recruitment in Africa, and Mali was identified as a key destination for new recruits. The recent fighting in Mali represents one of the heaviest losses for Russian mercenaries in international operations.

The situation in Mali has been unstable due to violence by jihadist and criminal groups since 2012. A junta led by Colonel Assimi Goita took power in 2022, breaking the country’s traditional alliance with France in favor of Russia. The recent battle in Mali has raised questions about the command structure of the mercenaries, with concerns about who is currently in charge of planning military actions on the ground. Ukrainian military intelligence suggested that they provided information to rebels which led to a successful operation against the Russian mercenaries. Russian officials have not yet commented on the incident, and independent researchers have highlighted the risks associated with Wagner’s operations in Africa.

The heavy losses suffered by Russian mercenaries in Mali have raised concerns about the command structures and planning of military operations on the ground. The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by Russian military planners in Africa and the risks associated with Wagner’s activities. The involvement of various groups in the conflict, including rebels, Russian mercenaries, and Al-Qaeda-linked organizations, has created a complex and volatile situation in Mali. The incident has also underscored the importance of independent journalism in reporting on conflicts and holding governments and armed groups accountable for their actions.
